What is an Interconnection Agreement (IA)? Why does Base need my previous IA ? How can I locate it?

Updated this week

What is an Interconnection Agreement?

An Interconnection Agreement (IA) is a contract between a utility company and a customer that defines how a distributed energy resource (DER)—such as a solar panel system or home battery—connects to the grid. It ensures the system meets safety, technical, and regulatory standards before operating alongside the utility grid. Typically spanning 12–15 pages, the document includes detailed technical specifications about the solar system’s setup and operational requirements essential for grid connectivity.

Why do I need to submit my Solar Interconnection Agreement to Base?

  • Base requires your existing solar interconnection agreement to properly file your paperwork and generate a new interconnection agreement for your Base battery.

  • The Solar Interconnection document that we request typically includes details about your solar installation, including panel and inverter specifications.

  • This documentation is essential for maintaining accurate records of your solar installation and supports compliance and efficient account management.

How to Obtain a Copy of Your IA

If you don't have a copy of your IA, follow these steps to request one:

  1. Search your email inbox for a message from your utility (Oncor or CenterPoint) from your solar installation.

  2. If you can’t locate it, you can request a copy from your utility via email at [email protected] for Oncor members or [email protected] for CenterPoint members. For CenterPoint, ensure you include any identifying details in your email request for faster processing.

  3. Verify Complete Documentation: Ensure the copy you receive includes all relevant details about your solar panel system and inverter size. If any information is missing, request a complete version from your utility provider.4. Provide Necessary Details: When requesting your IA, include specific information such as your home address

How to Send Your IA to Base Power

  1. Prepare Your Document: Ensure you have the full Interconnection Agreement in PDF format. Partial documents, like the Interconnection Application or Permission to Operate, are not suitable.

  2. Email Your IA: Send the PDF to [email protected]. Make sure the email address does not include any hyphens.

An important note:

Please send the agreement itself, not the application for the agreement or the “Permission to Operate” (PTO) letter—these are different documents. Typically, a Solar Interconnection Agreement spans 12–15 pages, detailing your system’s specifications and operational requirements. It is distinct from other documents like the Permission to Operate (PTO) letter, which authorizes system operation but lacks technical details, and the Application for Interconnection, which is simply an initial request. Ensure to provide the IA itself as requested.
