How do I know if I'm using battery power or grid power? How should I interpret the Base App “status” bar with “power source”, “battery charge”, and “estimated backup time”? Can I run off of the battery when the grid is available?

Updated over a week ago

In your Base App, you'll see a light green Status bar displaying your current power source, battery charge, and estimated backup time.

You’ll also receive push notifications during outages—but you can confirm you're in a grid outage if there's no checkmark next to "Grid" in the light green Status bar.

  • Power Source – Indicates the primary source powering your home over the past few minutes. Even if grid power is available, your battery may still be the main power source.

  • Battery Charge – Shows your current battery charge level. If you have multiple batteries, this reflects the combined charge. The level may fluctuate as the battery supports grid balancing or powers your home.

  • Estimated Backup Time – Displays how long your battery is expected to power your home during an outage. This estimate is based on your current battery charge and your energy usage over the last 15 minutes. The time is shown in tenths of an hour to avoid rounding down to 0 too quickly. Reducing energy usage can help extend this duration. Learn more about how this is calculated here.

You pay the same rate for electricity whether it comes from the grid or your battery. Base covers all battery charging costs.
