What are the Interconnection Agreement (IA) and Tariff Agreement (TA), and why do utilities require members to sign them?

Updated over a month ago

As part of getting your battery system connected to the grid, utilities like Oncor and CenterPoint require two signed agreements. These are required steps, and they do not affect your Base Power pricing, battery performance, or system features. There are no fees associated with signing the documents.

Signing the Tariff Application is a mandatory step for your battery system to be connected to the grid. If your utility is Oncor (ATX & DFW areas), you must sign both agreements. If your utility is CenterPoint (HTX area), Base signs both agreements and you don't need to sign them.

Here is more information for Oncor members:

Tariff Application (TA):

  • The Tariff Application applies to register your battery system with the grid, and it details the terms, rates, and conditions under which the battery interacts with the grid.

  • You should receive an email from Oncor to sign your Tariff Application 7-10 business days after your home photos are approved and you've scheduled your energy service activation with Base.

  • The email you can expect to receive the tariff application from is [email protected]

  • The Tariff Application specifically defines how electricity is bought and sold between your system and the grid, explains energy billing details such as time-of-use pricing or net metering, and ensures proper registration with the grid. Steps in the process include:

Interconnection Agreement (IA):

  • The Interconnection Agreement registers your battery with the grid, and it details the technical and safety requirements to connect and operate the battery with the grid.

  • A few weeks after signing your Tariff Agreement, you should receive an email from Oncor to sign your Interconnection Agreement. You may not receive this email until a few weeks after your battery installation, and you don't need to contact Base if it's taking a long time.

  • The email you can expect to receive the interconnection agreement from is [email protected]

Best Practices for Avoiding Issues

  • If you receive a reminder from Base to sign these agreements but can't find the email from your utility, please check your spam folder.

  • Additionally, check your trash folder and ensure that messages from your utility provider are not being blocked by your email system. Cross-verify timestamps or specific delivery information with the utility provider if necessary.

  • Regularly monitor communications from your utility provider to ensure critical information (like agreements) isn't missed.

  • Proactively verify agreements and other project documentation for completeness and accuracy to prevent delays. If the number of batteries shown in the document is not aligned with your expectations, please reach out to our support team.

Note: If you are being asked to to sign the tariff application or interconnection agreement again, that is because your original application was rejected due to a change in your utilities requirements.
